Law enforcement officers shot and killed a 37-year-old man in a Caledonia park Wednesday after they say he shot at them first.

The incident occurred Wednesday morning at Cliffside Park in the village of Caledonia. A statement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice said officers responded at 9:47 a.m. to that park for a call of a “man down.”

“The citizen stated there was a male (‘subject’) in all black clothing lying face down on a path and he was not moving,” a social media post from the Racine County Sheriffs Office said. “The citizen stated he did not feel safe getting any closer to the subject.”

The social media post said a Racine County Sheriff’s deputy and two officers from the Caledonia Police Department responded to the scene.

“Once officers arrived on scene the subject discharged a firearm,” the DOJ statement said.

The statement said a tactical team with officers and first responders from the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, Caledonia Police Department, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and the Caledonia Fire Department responded to the scene.

“The tactical team attempted negotiations with the subject but circumstances arose that caused law enforcement to use deadly force,” the statement said.

The man died at the scene, according to the statement.

The officers involved are now on administrative leave. It remains unclear how many officers that includes.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Office social media post said the individual was identified as a “37-year-old white male with ties to the City of Racine and the Village of Mount Pleasant.”
