A teenage boy who’s been hospitalized since the Dec. 16 shooting at Abundant Life Christian School is back in critical condition.
The boy previously seemed to be improving, and UW Health officials announced in mid-January that he had been upgraded to “good” condition.
Since then, things have taken a turn for the worse.

“The remaining patient who has been cared for at American Family Children’s Hospital following the Abundant Life Christian School shooting is again in critical condition,” UW Health spokesperson Emily Greendonner confirmed in a statement this week. “The family continues to request privacy at this time.”
A 15-year-old student at the private school in Madison opened fire during a mixed grade student study hall, just days before Christmas break. Before killing herself, the student fatally shot 43-year-old Erin West, a teacher, and 14-year-old Rubi Vergara, another student, police said.
The shooting also injured six people, two of them critically. One of those who was critically injured, a teenage student at the school, was discharged from American Family Children’s Hospital on Jan. 30 after being upgraded to “good” condition. That student remains in good condition, a UW Health spokesperson confirmed this week.
But another teenage boy, who goes by the first name Samy, has been in the hospital for months.
The boy is fighting for his life, according to Marcio Sierra, Jr., a pastor who’s been posting updates on behalf of Samy’s family.
“For the past few weeks, Samy has been battling something called Autoimmune Encephalitis, a rare, serious condition that occurs when the immune system attacks the brain,” Sierra posted to Facebook last week. “Samy continues to be unresponsive. Samy’s family remains confident in God’s power to heal and they are grateful for your continued prayers. We are living by faith and not by sight and are declaring that our Lord will finish what HE has started in the life of Samy.”
A prayer service for Samy is planned for Wednesday evening at Lighthouse Church in Madison.
