Nuclear Regulatory Commission Holds Public Hearing On Kewaunee Power Plant Safety

Federal regulators say the shutdown of Kewaunee nuclear power plant is being safely maintained.

A public meeting on Thursday night will allow people to ask questions.

Officials with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said their inspections continue at the former Kewaunee plant as there is still a lot of highly radioactive waste in the plant’s storage pool from when the reactor last ran two years ago. Plus, there’s nuclear waste in concrete and steel casks.

NRC spokeswoman Prema Chandrathil said the plant is in compliance with federal regulations.

“The public is being protected throughout all the changes the plant is undertaking, and we can talk at the meeting about how that is being done,” said Chandrathil.

The NRC meeting on Thursday night is at the town hall in Carlton. The town and the plant owner Dominion Energy are currently battling over the assessed value of the 900-acre plant and the potential impact on the local tax base.
