Larry would probably do well on the game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” He knows about geography, science, meteorology, the environment, travel and leisure activities, consumer issues, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, computers, home repair, gardening, cooking, medicine, and more. After hosting a public radio program for 55 years, he’s obviously picked up a lot of facts and figures.
In 2022, Larry retired from the Department of Life Sciences Communication at the UW-Madison. He taught classes for 104 semesters. He also advised undergraduate and graduate students and served on several department and college committees in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
When he retired from teaching, WPR offered Larry the chance to work full time in radio. He accepted an increased position because he really enjoys hosting his shows. In fact, he admits, the best part of his day is his 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. talk show. It’s a break in the day to sit back, meet interesting people and discuss important topics. Larry tends to focus on environmental issues, consumer topics, and helpful “how-to” advice. But, he has a soft spot for Wisconsin authors and horticulture experts.
Like he sounds on the radio, Larry is a nice guy: outgoing, friendly, knowledgeable, and curious. You can’t see it, but you can hear that Larry enjoys his time on the radio. He’s attentive, involved, and quick with a laugh or anecdote. After all these years, he still has a lot of fun with the show, and he enjoys helping all the callers get their questions answered.
