The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced Thursday that it has mailed letters to about 26,000 residents recently kicked off of BadgerCare, informing them of the state’s new special enrollment period on the federal health care exchange.
The residents were removed from the program after Gov. Scott Walker rejected additional federal Medicaid funding. The federal government recently granted a request from Sen. Tammy Baldwin to give those residents a second chance to apply for subsidized insurance on the federal exchange.
“The (DHS) made and continues to make robust outreach efforts to inform the transitioning population and the public about their options under the federal government’s Affordable Care Act,” said Claire Smith, a DHS spokesperson.

The special enrollment period began on Sept. 4 and runs until Nov. 2.
