Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Glenbeulah, says President Donald Trump deserves praise for his first year in office, although he does wish the president wouldn’t tweet so much.

In a year-end interview with WPR’s “The Morning Show,” Grothman credited Trump for improving the nation’s business climate thanks in part to his recently signed tax cut.

“I wish he wouldn’t tweet so much,” Grothman said. “I think that hurts him. Otherwise, I think he inherited quite a few problems. He’s taken off and tried to deal with those problems.”

Aside from Trump’s Twitter habit, Grothman downplayed other criticisms of the president, including an investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government in the 2016 presidential election.

“When I talk to people back in the district … nobody talks about this,” Grothman said.

In 2018, Grothman said he hopes Trump will use his bully pulpit to advocate for changes to government safety net programs.
