Rep. Brett Hulsey announced Thursday that he’s running an Independent write-in campaign for governor.
The announcement means that there are now two candidates who lost statewide Democratic primaries in August that are now running write-in gubernatorial campaigns. Hulsey ran an unsuccessful Democratic bid for governor, losing to Mary Burke in the primary election in August. Also running an Independent write-in campaign is Mary Jo Walters, who lost her Democratic primary for lieutenant governor to state Sen. Jon Lehman.
Government Accountability Board spokesman Reid Magney said there’s a reason candidates register as write-ins.

“The purpose of registering as a write-in candidate is so the municipal clerks and Boards of Canvas, when they go through the election results … know to break out the votes for those people,” said Magney. “If you don’t register with us, the clerks don’t know to look for your name, and it won’t be counted.”
Also running write-in campaigns for governor are Republican Steve Evans and Constitution Party candidate Jumoka Johnson.
