Latino Groups Urge Walker To Veto Local ID Card Ban

Latino leaders say they’ll keep the pressure on Gov. Scott Walker to veto a bill that would ban ID cards issued by local governments.

State Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa gathered leaders of groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens and Voces de la Frontera in front of a prominent Milwaukee Latino grocery store on Friday afternoon. Zamarripa, a Milwaukee Democrat, said GOP candidates will not gain Latino support if the ban on local photo IDs becomes law.

“We’re a fast-growing group, and it will be detrimental, I believe, to the future of the Republican Party if they continue to push this anti-immigrant legislation through,” said Zamarripa.

During a visit to Milwaukee Thursday, the governor had said it’s better for states to issue photo IDs.

“I think most states, regardless of whether it’s Wisconsin or anywhere else, prefer to have a statewide standard,” he said.

Walker said he’ll be looking at the bill.
