Two veteran politicians reached out to Milwaukee-area voters over the weekend in a bid to win the Democratic primary in the 4th Congressional District.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore is facing off against challenger Gary George on Tuesday’s ballot.

The list of visiting officials coming to Milwaukee on Sunday to support Moore in her bid to win a sixth term included U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn. Ellison told a get-out-the-vote rally that Moore has been a fighter for working people.

“Let me tell you something. We (are) fighting for Gwen to win this election, but Gwen don’t love no elective office. She loves the people,” Ellison said.

Moore said she has been battling to raise the minimum wage, protect Medicare and Medicaid, and reform Social Security to help low-income citizens, but has been hampered by the U.S. House’s majority Republicans blocking changes.

“They have exceeded the official do-nothing Congress of 1948. I mean, me, they have really given do nothing, do nothing,” Moore said.

George, a former state senator, said he has been campaigning at doors, from his car and on his bicycle, insisting he could help bring more jobs to Milwaukee.

“Of course, raising the minimum wage is critically important,” he said. “But, what people need is a job. You can’t have a minimum wage if you don’t have a job.”

George said he’d work in a bipartisan way to get more federal money to Milwaukee to create jobs in sewer repairs and through a university-to-jobs consortium.

George said his cousin, Ellison, coming in to campaign for Moore is Washington, D.C., insider baseball.
