The NAACP is joining the family of a Milwaukee man killed by police last year in asking for a completed U.S. Justice Department investigation of the Milwaukee Police Department.
A white police officer killed Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill black man, in a Milwaukee park 14 months ago. Hamilton’s family has been asking the DOJ for a probe into the patterns and practices of the Milwaukee police.
Wendell Harris of the NAACP said his organization has launched a petition drive calling for the investigation.

“We, the NAACP, partnered with the Hamilton family, and we are on board for doing whatever we can to help make those demands a reality,” said Harris.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Milwaukee said the Justice Department continues to gather facts to determine whether there’s a legitimate basis to conduct a pattern or practice investigation.
