The National Rifle Association has endorsed Republican Brad Schimel in the race for attorney general.
The announcement highlights a key difference between Schimel and Democratic candidate Susan Happ on their stances toward Second Amendment rights. They generally disagree on whether to require background checks on private gun sales . Schimel said he opposes any efforts to add new gun control regulations, and that background checks on such sales won’t reduce gun violence.
“We have plenty of laws to regulate gun sales, and you know criminals are gonna get their hands on guns. The problem isn’t going be solved by making it more difficult for law-abiding gun owners to exercise their rights,” said Schimel.

Happ released a statement on Monday calling background check an obvious solution to preventing gun violence. Happ herself has a concealed carry permit and said she supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms. She said that she’ll use the attorney general’s office to push for passage background check legislation.
