Wisconsin’s Constitution would be amended to eliminate the state treasurer under a measure that passed the Assembly Tuesday
Plan sponsor Rep. Michael Schraa, R-Oshkosh, said so many duties have been stripped from the treasurer’s office that it’s no longer relevant. He thinks the public will agree if they get a chance to weigh in through a referendum.
“The current state treasurer and his predecessor both campaigned heavily on the platform that the office needed to be eliminated,” said Schraa. “Both were elected by the majority of the electorate. Our constituents are intelligent enough to decide for themselves whether or not they see value in this outdated and simply symbolic relic of the past.”

Before the public gets a chance to vote on the plan, it still needs to pass the Senate this session and pass the full Legislature again next session. A similar measure died in the Senate last year.
