Priebus had served as chief of staff since the start of Trump’s administration in January and had been a key figure in Trump’s transition from candidate to commander-in-chief.

Priebus served as chairman for Republican National Committee prior to the administration position. Priebus moved into that role after helping Gov. Scott Walker win election as governor in 2010, when he was head of the Wisconsin Republican Party.

Priebus, who said he put his resignation in Thursday, issued a statement Friday evening thanking Trump:

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this president and our country. I want to thank the president for giving me this very special opportunity. I will continue to serve as a strong supporter of the president’s agenda and policies. I can’t think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me and I wish him God’s blessings and great success.”

Trump thanked Priebus for his dedication and said the two accomplished “a lot.”

Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos took to Twitter a few minutes after Trump’s announcement. He called the move “dumb” and had nothing kind to say to the Trump administration. Vos and Reince were roommates in college at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and have been close throughout their political careers.
