Schimel Says Milwaukee County DA Is Not Prosecuting Enough Gun Possession Felonies

Republican Attorney General Candidate Cites Findings By Conservative Watchdog Group

Brad Schimel was interviewed by Journal Sentinel editors and reporters on Thursday.

Brad Schimel, the Republican candidate in the race for attorney general, said in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s editorial board that Milwaukee County’s district attorney is cutting too many plea deals with felons who illegally possess guns.

Schimel cited figures from an open records request obtained by the conservative media watchdog group Media Trackers.

“We know from media information released earlier this year that less than half of the gun cases that were referred to the Milwaukee DA’s office during a three-month period last summer got prosecuted,” said Schimel. “I don’t know all the reasons for that and I am not here attacking the Milwaukee DA. What I am offering is help.”

Schimel said that if he wins the election, he’ll send investigators and prosecutors from the Department of Justice to Milwaukee to pursue more gun cases.

Schimel said he hasn’t talked with Milwaukee County’s Democratic District Attorney John Chisholm about the plan. Chisholm has endorsed the Democrat in the race, Jefferson County DA Susan Happ.
