During a Monday news conference announcing both a Milwaukee Bucks pre-season game and training camp in Madison, University of Wisconsin athletics officials voiced their support for a new Bucks arena.

UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said the possible financial impact for Milwaukee and for the state makes the proposed arena a “no-brainer” for him.

“The Bucks do need, and our state does need, a new arena. I think it’s important for us to keep pro basketball in the state,” said Alvarez.

Men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan, when asked about the arena, said he also sees “a lot of benefits” to the Bucks arena proposal.

The purpose of the news conference was to announce that the Bucks would hold a week of training camp in Madison this fall, from Sept. 28-Oct. 2. They’ll also play a pre-season game on Oct. 20 against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Kohl Center.

The announcement comes as state lawmakers are considering a plan approving $250 million in public funding to finance a new arena.
