Wolf Questions Up For Vote In Spring Meetings

By

Several advisory questions about wolf hunting with dogs will be on the agenda at the annual spring wildlife hearings in April.

DNR board member Dave Clausen added a question Wednesday (1/23). It states that the wolf hunt quota was quickly reached this year without the use of dogs and asks if people would favor a law prohibiting the use of dogs to hunt wolves and the training of dogs to hunt wolves. Clausen is a veterinarian, “and animal welfare has been a big part of my life. I view wolf-dog confrontations as perhaps violating the state statutes on animal fighting.”

Clausen says many people – including Humane Societies, in a recent lawsuit – are also asking the question. He says he knows that many hunters attend the April wildlife hearings. People who go to those sessions will also be asked four other questions from the DNR about regulations for training dogs to hunt wolves.
