Justice Department Funds Pilot Police Body Camera Programs
The Department of Justice announced Friday that it will dedicate $20 million to fund pilot police body camera programs at police departments around the country. The move comes after a year of protests over police-community relations, particularly the use of lethal force against black men and boys.
A 2013 study has shown body cameras to reduce the incidents of use-of-force by police officers as well as citizen complaints, but even advocates for the cameras admit there are important policy questions that need to be answered before they can be used widely.
