  • Wisconsin Printing Museum Ready To Go Back Into Action

The Hamilton Wood Type and Print Museum got some unexpected news last year — they had to move.

When the building housing the museum was sold, the museum — home to a number of printing presses, font collections and more — needed to find a new location, museum officials said.

Now, the Two Rivers institution is getting ready to open up again — and celebrating with its fifth annual “Wayzgoose,” a gathering of printers from around the country, and an open house next month.

Museum director Jim Moran said the new digs are close to ready for the opening this month, which is saying a lot given a short turnaround time and the amount of material to move and set up.

“You had to move about 12 thousand square feet of museum equipment and type as well about 25,000 square feet of stored equipment and type,” Moran said.

He said moving the museum was a heavy job.

“I have experiencing moving presses, but typically that didn’t involve 27 semi loads of it, which is what this amounted to,” he said.

This weekend, printing professionals and hobbyists will gather at the museum for the Wayzgoose event. Moran said the name Wayzgoose originally referred to year-end celebrations held by printers, sometimes involving a goose dinner.

“We kind of keep to the traditions,” he said, “but over the years printers have played a little bit loose with the term wayzgoose, but it seemed apt for a year-end event we’ve had for five years now.”

The event includes a range of talks, activities, and hands-on activities ranging from traditional printing presses to cutting-edge digitized type.

While the Wayzgoose is sold out, the museum has a housewarming celebration scheduled for Dec. 7 to let the public check out the new location.
