Overcome by despair and disillusionment with the world, Trotty finds himself in the bell tower of a church where he encounters the spirits of the bells, personified as goblins. The goblins present a spirit guide (who resembles Lily) who shows Trotty visions of the future. First, they visit his daughter Meg.
