Authorities have identified the suspect in Tuesday’s terrorist attack in New York City that killed at least eight people and injured nearly a dozen as a 29-year-old Uzbek immigrant. We discuss the latest developments on the situation.
Law enforcement officials say Sayfullo Saipov, who had been living in Tampa, drove a Home Depot rental truck on a bike path and rammed into a crowd, then crashed into a school bus. A video from the scene shows the driver jumping out of the vehicle and brandishing what appeared to be guns. Witnesses say he shouted “Allahu akbar,” which is Arabic for “God is great.” He was later shot by police, taken into custody and remains hospitalized.
According to reports, officials say handwritten notes in which Saipov declared his allegiance to the Islamic State, or ISIS, were found inside the vehicle.
President Donald Trump responded to the attack on Twitter, saying “We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!” He also tweeted that he’s ordered the Department of Homeland Security to step up its Extreme Vetting Program, adding that “being politically correct is fine, but not for this!”
