The new US House speaker and Christian nationalism

Air Date:
Heard On The Morning Show
U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson with his hand on a Bible taking an oath
Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., takes the oath to be the new House speaker from the Dean of the House Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., at the Capitol in Washington, Oct. 25, 2023. Johnson does not typically mention one aspect of his work before being elected to Congress. He was once chosen to be the dean of a small Baptist law school. But the school ultimately collapsed without enrolling students or opening its doors. The episode is a reminder of how little is known about Johnson, who quickly rose from relative obscurity to House speaker. Alex Brandon/AP Photo

The new speaker of the U.S. House has proclaimed that God has “ordained” Christians to govern the United States. We talk with a researcher of Christian nationalism about how this philosophy evolved and what it could mean for the country, its politics and those who don’t share the same beliefs.
