On today’s “Newsmakers” program, we speak with guests about the “Human Rights Policing” certification course available through UW-La Crosse Graduate & Extended Learning. Host Ezra Wall speaks with course creator and instructor, Peter Marina (pictured), a UWL associate professor of sociology and criminal justice, and his father Pedro Marina, a retired lieutenant with the New Orleans Police Department. The course is designed to build compassion among police officers and address systemic issues in policing by training law enforcement to uphold each person’s human rights. Wall then speaks with two La Crosse area police sergeants who’ve completed the class and share their experiences.
