A La Crosse School District administrator says the COVID-19 pandemic that has closed schools is still a difficult moving target filled with uncertainties.
“We’re all scrambling a little bit to try to do right by the community and the community’s children,” said Dr. Troy Harcey, associate superintendent of instruction.
Wisconsin K-12 schools shutdown on Wednesday of this week, closed “indefinitely.”
The closure affects nearly 900,000 students in Wisconsin including more than 7,200 in the La Crosse School District.
Harcey said schools in the region have been meeting with professional groups to game plan ways to educate students.
La Crosse had a phase 1 plan that involved getting library books in the hands of younger students before schools closed to focus on literacy.
Students in grades four through 12 have access to iPads and laptops, and they focused on making sure teachers and students could connect electronically.
Harcey said school officials are also in the process of phase 2 planning which would provide a more robust curriculum for students if they don’t return to school in the long term.
The school district also started a meal delivery service this week to children under 18. Free breakfast and lunch will be offered Monday – Friday.
Harcey said school officials are also involved in planning to meet the needs for daycare.
