Left photo aerial view of Interstate 35 looking south from downtown Duluth showing the temporary lane changes around construction and the overpasses to 535 to Superior temporarily removed. The right photograph is one of the last spans of steel bridge girders from the overpass of Interstate 535 to I35 is taken down. New ramps to the road leading to Superior will reduce left exits and stops. Photographs from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The notorious “Can of Worms” interchange of Interstates 35 and 535 that connects Duluth to Superior is in the midst of a complete rebuild, designed to enhance safety at the intersection long blamed for daily if not hourly fender benders and near-misses. Minnesota Department of Transportation project engineer Pat Huston joins “Simply Superior” host Robin Washington for an update on the $435 million project, including the elimination of blind merges and left exits, updated infrastructure, and the replacement of an infamous traffic light at the top of an exit ramp with… another traffic light? Huston explains the logic.

Also, Thomas Wayne King and Debra King have been making beautiful music together for years, especially after retiring from their university professorships. The Solon Springs couple, whose songs echo the natural beauty of the area, share their work and speak with Washington ahead of an appearance at the Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center in their hometown.
