When it’s time to take her naturally fed pigs for processing, Carly Stephenson of Will O’ the Wind Farms near Washburn has to drive 120 miles to Sturgeon Lake, Minn. – assuming the butcher and meat inspector can be there at their appointed times. The trip and scheduling shell game are due to a shortage of both inspectors and processors that significantly affects small and specialty livestock growers in a system that favors giant agribusinesses.
Stephenson and Bayfield County Administration Mark Abeles-Allison, who advocates for the small farms, join “Simply Superior” host Robin Washington to talk about the inspector shortage and ways the state can help.
Also, with 52 years in radio and 14 of them at WPR, Al Ross was a warm and familiar voice on Wisconsin airwaves. That included listeners of ‘Simply Superior,” which occasionally featured his genial interviews with regional and national arts figures. Al, who passed away recently at 73, is remembered with samplings from some of his most memorable interviews.
