Superior Police Chief Nicholas Alexander remembers his first call 25 years ago: An underaged drinking complaint that interrupted breakfast with his training officer at Perkins. He’s still in contact with the then-youthful former offender who’s long been on the straight and narrow — perhaps a testament to the community policing initiatives Alexander championed after taking over as chief nine years ago. Now, he’s retiring and looks back on his tenure with “Simply Superior” host Robin Washington on Friday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. Among his career highlights are the implementation of body cameras for officers and the Pathways to Hope program, which offers treatment in lieu of arrest for those afflicted with substance abuse issues.
Also, an annual recital has become a regional holiday tradition with the “Season of Song” concert by the University of Wisconsin-Superior music department, now in its 26th year. The 75-minute performance on Dec. 3 and 5 at Superior’s Cathedral of Christ the King featured everything from holiday carols to African hymns, culminating with an audience-participation sing-along. Organist and UWS faculty member Rachael Kresha and senior voice major Riley Hinnenkamp join Washington to showcase highlights from the performance.
