Politicians often portray “real America” as some nostalgic, heartland-rooted, mythic place that is somehow more genuine than the actual coasts or the cities of this nation. But Americans who hail from cities and coasts, flatlands, and rural farm towns share many of the same aspirations for their families, and ambitions for the nation.
