Week In Review: Walker, Trump And ‘America’s Dairyland’

Gov. Scott Walker begins his campaign for a third term, President Donald Trump rejects claims he disrespected a fallen soldier, and a top lobbyist’s call to remove “America’s Dairyland” from Wisconsin license plates. Walker plans to formally launch his re-election campaign on Nov. 5 at a manufacturing facility in Waukesha. He released an online ad on Wednesday touting his accomplishments while he is shown jogging, talking to manufacturing workers and riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle – and saying there’s “more work to be done.”

Florida congresswoman Frederica Wilson claimed that Trump, in a phone call, told the widow of a soldier killed in Niger that her husband “knew what he signed up for.” Trump tweeted on Wednesday that Wilson’s story was “totally fabricated,” though she later insisted she and others in the car heard him. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump’s press secretary, said that several White House officials, including Chief of Staff John Kelly, were in the room during the call.

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce President Kurt Bauer suggested that the phrase “America’s Dairyland” on state license plates paints an incomplete picture of Wisconsin’s economy. He said on Monday that a more contemporary phrase, such as “Forward” – the state’s motto – would be a better fit since Wisconsin’s economy extends beyond agriculture. “America’s Dairyland” has graced license plates since 1940.
