Activists from the Young Gifted and Black Coalition plan a march to the state Capitol in Madison Wednesday to protest Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne’s decision not to file charges against a Madison police officer for fatally shooting 19-year-old Tony Robinson.
The Madison Police Department has been preparing for Wednesday’s demonstrations for weeks. Chief Mike Koval said those preparations include working closely with city, county and community leaders to address issues protesters have raised about racial disparities in Madison — including “issues of pronounced poverty and joblessness and an education system that is not benefiting all of our kids, which the police can not address single handedly.”
Koval said the Police Department is “committed to listening to those concerns.”

Organizers of the protest are still calling for Officer Matt Kenny to be held accountable for Robinson’s death. Koval said an internal investigation into the shooting isn’t yet complete, and said there is no timeline for when or whether officer Kenny will return to active duty.
