While conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been an issue for veterans for more than a century, the “signature wound” of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars has been traumatic brain injury (TBI). Those conditions, as well as increasing rates of suicide, are stressing an already-taxed military mental health system.
