A $640 million bridge project linking Minnesota to western Wisconsin is expected to open to traffic in late summer.
The St. Croix Crossing stands 225 feet above the St. Croix River and has been in the works since the 1970s.
It’s replacing an 80-year-old bridge locals say causes congestion and is often closed for repairs. Construction of the bridge over the federally protected waterway was held up by lawsuits and eventually required congressional approval.

St. Croix Economic Development Corporation Director Bill Rubin said the bridge’s completion should bring economic benefits.
“There will be plenty of opportunities for residential subdivisions. I think there will be plenty of opportunities for main street development in those communities that took the time to embrace the reality of a river crossing,” Rubin said.
Crews are currently painting the St. Croix Crossing while installing electrical and drainage systems. Restoration work on construction areas will begin in July.
