UW-Green Bay Chancellor Leaving For University Of Akron

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Gary Miller is leaving the campus at the end of September to become the head of the University of Akron.

Miller became the sixth chancellor at UW-Green Bay in 2014. In a press release he said it has been an honor to work for with the campus and community.

“It has been a great joy and a deep honor for me to have been Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay,” wrote Miller. “This is an exceptional university with great students, faculty, staff and a very bright future. The team at UW-Green Bay is the best I’ve worked with in my career. They are creative and fully committed to this University. The leadership team has a clear vision for the institution and knows how to get there. I wish everyone the very, very best. Green Bay and Wisconsin will always be close to my heart.”

In an interview with WPR, UW-Green Bay Provost Michael Alexander said Miller was forward-thinking and strived to align the campus with businesses and other community members. He said one example of Miller’s accomplishments was his push for the creation of the Resch School of Engineering.

“We’re incredibly proud of the work that Chancellor Miller did and his impact on the community is going to last way beyond the five years that he was here,” said Alexander. “We have a very clear mission and vision that the chancellor helped us to create and we’re going to carry that forward.”

UW System President Ray Cross said in an emailed statement that Miller was an effective leader at UW-Green Bay helping grow enrollment while elevating the campus’s standing as a “strong regional comprehensive institution within the UW System.”

“His leadership was instrumental in developing and implementing mission changes that were responsive to state and regional needs; restructuring the organization to better serve students; and developing academic programs to meet regional employers’ needs,” wrote Cross. “As important, he was extraordinarily successful in community engagement, helping build relationships that not only benefit us now, but will serve us well into the future. We will miss him, but we certainly wish him the best.”

The UW Board of Regents will now be tasked with choosing a new chancellor for UW-Green Bay, though no timeline for the search has been announced. It will be the third chancellor search undertaken on a UW campus this year.
