Kids of any age will be able to take part in this year’s deer hunt under a law signed by Gov. Scott Walker.

Previously, kids as young as 10 could go on a mentored hunt with an adult in Wisconsin. The law Walker signed ends that restriction.

The new law also ends the restriction that a child and an adult on a mentored hunt carry just one gun between them, meaning that now, an adult could carry a gun on a mentored hunt and a child could carry another.

When the plan passed the Legislature, backers argued parents should be able to decide when their kids are old enough to hunt, and not the government. Opponents argued the plan would make the woods less safe for kids and adults alike.

The law takes effect immediately, meaning it will be in place for the next gun deer hunting season, which runs from Nov. 18-26.

It will also apply to other types of hunting, ranging from small game to the archery deer season.
